I have picked up the book You've Gotta Connect by James Alan Sturtevant and I can't put it down. The author is so engaging. He writes with a conversational tone that captures the reader's attention. He is a teacher in the classroom so he is real and isn't afraid to tell it like it is. I highly recommend this book to help in making connections with today's students. You won't be sorry!
When the class wasn't listening to the teacher's instructions and began to work before she was finished speaking, the teacher calmly reminded the students of the PBIS goal clearly written on the board. Like magic, the students stopped working and listened to all the directions. But was this really magic? No! This teacher has thoughtfully posted goals that shape her students behavior. If she notices her students are struggling with a particular behavior, she uses the PBIS goal at the beginning and throughout the class period to kindly remind students of expectations. Breaking down goals into smaller more manageable chunks that everyone can find success in really sets the tone in this classroom. Would you like to see this in action? It was definitly the highlight of our day to be able to celebrate our coaching success for second trimester! So many good things are happening at LCMS! Go TITANS! #BelieveAchieveLCMS
This picture represents one way that we monitor students progress through the writing process. Students move their marker to the phase they are working in. The teachers can easily see if students are falling behind and know how to tailor instruction to meet needs of small groups. It may seem simple, but students get really excited to move their marker and see progress in writing! #BelieveAchieveLCMS |
